It’s been 95 years since Disney was first created and the much-loved company is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Across the weekend, Disney hosted its annual D23 Expo in Anaheim, California and brought with it a huge number of major announcements. Here are the key takeaways from this year’s event:
ONE: Emma Stone was born to play Cruella de Vil
It was announced back in 2016 that Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone would take on the role of the iconic Cruella de Vil in the live-action movie based on the villian’s life. Now, we’ve been given a first glimpse at what Stone looks like in the costume and it is magnificent. Sporting the famed black and white hair, Stone can be seen wearing a fitted leather jacket with statement shoulders and chain details at the hip, suggesting a more high-fashion spin on the character for 2019. The film, which is set to look at de Vil’s life prior to becoming an infamous dog-napper, is scheduled for release on May 28, 2021.

TWO: Lizzie McGuire is making a comeback
In news that made our 12-year-old selves squeal with delight, Hilary Duff announced that she will return as beloved character Lizzie McGuire in a new TV series. Speaking on stage, Duff said, “The good news is, just like me and everybody who loved Lizzie and has grown up with her, Lizzie’s also grown up. She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget, which is super exciting. She has her dream job. She has kind of the perfect life right now.” The show will be set in NYC however Duff is the only original star confirmed as yet to appear in the reboot. We’re not-so secretly hoping Gordo makes an appearance. That would truly be what dreams are made of.

THREE: Black Panther 2 has a release date
With all major details very much under wraps, the only thing director Ryan Coogler could announce during D23 2019 was that Black Panther 2 will be released on May 6, 2022. “We’re hard at work on it trying to give you something special. We just really, really want it to be right,” he told the crowd. Let the countdown begin.
FOUR: Kit Harrington confirmed he is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Following the end of Game of Thrones, Kit Harrington has a new role to sink his teeth into. Ending months of speculation, it was confirmed that Harrington will play Dane Whitman, also known as Black Knight, in The Eternals. And in excellent news for GoT fans, Richard Madden (who played Harrington’s brother in the series) is also confirmed to appear in the film which will land in theatres on November 6, 2020.
FIVE: The first look at Star Wars: Episode IX is here
No major Disney convention would be complete with a Star Wars mention and this was particularly important. Disney released new footage of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Anthony Daniels (who has played C-3PO since the films began). The film, hitting screens on December 20, marks the end of the Skywalker saga after 40 years.
Another highlight from the convention was the announcement of the first Cirque du Soleil x Disney show to begin in April 2020 at Disney World in California.
